...  I stopped in at that time and Sara gave me a grand tour while the painters were at work.  I couldn’t believe the quality of the restoration and drooled over the giant paneled pocket doors separating dining room and living room, the seven marble fireplaces (four located in guest rooms), and the elegant and carefully restored woodwork.

This past summer my husband and I were in Hallowell once again and this is where we stayed.  Well, it was great.  The building is lovely. Each room is painted and decorated in its own color scheme, so good luck picking out your favorite. We stayed in the handicapped-accessible room on the first floor, even though we are not handicapped.  It is a very stylish room and we couldn’t resist it. The other four guest rooms are up the grand staircase on the second floor.  All five rooms have bathrooms en suite.  Also on the first floor are the library, living room dining room and Sara’s kitchen.  Original art, a thoughtful sprinkling of antiques, elegant beds with sumptuous linens and fabrics, polished hardwood floors, intriguing light fixtures – Sara has softened the formality of the building and made it relaxing and fun.  Breakfasts were delicious.  Sara is a warm and welcoming presence in addition to being a good cook.  The sense of humor you pick up in her decorating is borne out in your conversations with her.  Since it was summer, we spent a lot of time relaxing on the back porch overlooking a terraced lawn that dropped eventually to tall oaks with glimpses of the Kennebec River through rustling leaves.  We also spent a lot of time enjoying Hallowell, a small, historically intact river town with many little shops, restaurants and cafes, right next door to the Capitol in Augusta.
